Urgent Call to Action!

Not everyone in our community has a home that they can “Just Stay Home” or “Shelter in Place” in. According to Wilder Research Center we have a conservative estimate of 15,000 people experiencing homelessness on any given night in the state of Minnesota with 6,000 of these being unaccompanied homeless youth! We do not have a prevalence study yet on the number of youth sex trafficked within our state, however, multiple academic studies have shown that 1 out of every 4 youth who are homeless also are sex trafficked (1,500). These people and youth need our support always but especially now in order to stay healthy and safe!

The Link is a member agency and partner with several federal and state collaborations working to address and end homelessness (A Way Home America, National Network 4 Youth, True Colors, the Minnesota Coalition for the Homeless and the Youth Services Network)-we are working in hand with these coalitions and the other front line providers for homeless services, shelter and housing to help support people through this crisis that do not have homes!

Tomorrow our Minnesota State Legislature will be considering bills to address the COVID-19 pandemic including a recommendation by the Governor which include increased levels of support, shelter, housing and healthcare for people experiencing homelessness. Many of you have reached out wondering how YOU can help! This is a very easy but important way you can help! Call and email your state legislators to urge them to support the Homes 4 All recommendation of $50 Million for support of emergency shelters and $100 million for rental assistance along with increases of funding for our state’s Homeless Youth Act and Safe Harbor for Sex Trafficked Youth!

All you have to do is enter your address into this website, and it will tell you who your representatives are: https://www.gis.leg.mn/iMaps/districts/. You may send them a message like the one below or write one of your own. Suggested message:

Dear [Legislator],

In such a time of crisis, it’s important to remember those that do not have a home. Our youth, adults and families who are experiencing homelessness either do not have a home or have an unsafe home and, therefore, cannot “stay home” or “shelter in place”. Now, more than ever, we need to support our youth. We need increased housing, shelter, and services, specifically for homeless youth along with the important services for adults and families. These measures were needed before the COVID-19 crisis and will continue to be needed afterwards, but at this time especially, these youth need to be cared for. Please support measures, either as COVID-19 responses or others such as increases to our state’s Homeless Youth Act, Safe Harbor Law and Homes 4 All Legislative Agenda, that prioritize funding for youth housing, shelter, and services.

And, at the Federal Level we need to Tell CongressPeople Experiencing Homelessness Need Coronavirus Support Now!

  • Right now, the emergency supplemental spending bill includes NOTHING for people experiencing homelessness, a population that is at particular risk of health crises.
