Starting Strong: Back to School with The Link
The first day of school should be exciting—but for many young people experiencing homelessness or housing instability, it can also be overwhelming. Too often, youth start the year without the supplies, clothing, or support they need to be successful at school.
That’s why every August, The Link hosts our Back to School Bash—a day of celebration and community where young people pick out the resources they need for the year ahead. In 2025, with the support of incredible community and corporate partners, hundreds of youth and families in our programs received backpacks filled with school supplies, hygiene kits (including culturally specific products for textured hair), clothing, and more.
The day was about more than supplies—it was about belonging and joy. Youth and families shared free pizza from the Brick Oven Bus, sweet treats from Cardigan Donuts and Hot Hands Pie and Biscuit, and enjoyed music, face painting, tattoos, and games. Thanks to partners like Greater Twin Cities United Way, Ryerson, Choice Bank, United Bikers Motorcycle Club, Bombas, The Drawer, Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church and many more generous donors, youth were able to access the high-quality resources they deserve.
Sustained Support: School Matters
The Back to School Bash is just one way The Link helps youth find success at school. Through our School Matters Program, we provide year-round support—from transportation and advocacy to basic needs—so that youth stay engaged in their education. With the resources and trusted relationships they need, youth are empowered to attend school, make progress toward their goals, and build a brighter future.
As this school year begins, we’re proud to stand beside youth every step of the way, making sure they have not just what they need to start school, but the ongoing support to succeed.
